Professional experience & key contributions
- Currently working in vegetable improvement at ICAR–IIVR, Varanasi since December 2021.
- Breeding for heat-tolerant cauliflower, using micropropagation as a selection aid.
- Characterized around 1200 germplasm accessions of brinjal / eggplant from the National Gene Bank at ICAR–IIVR, Varanasi.
- At ICAR–RC–NEH Region, Manipur Centre (2013–2021), contributed to development of semi-glutinous rice varieties for Manipur State: RC Maniphou-13, RC Maniphou-14, Maniphou-15, RC Maniphou-16 and RC Manichakhao 1.
- Contributed to two rice genetic stocks with blast resistance (Akhanphou, INGR 22111; RCMR 13, INGR 23001), and one carrot genetic stock VRCAR 214 (CMS line) and its maintainer Kashi Arun (INGR 22160).
- Identified a novel semi-dwarf sd1-bm allele in rice genotype Pusa 1652 and designed a functional dCAPS marker (AKS-sd1) for marker-assisted breeding.
- Characterized Chakhao rice landraces of Manipur – agro-morphological, molecular and anthocyanin profiling.
- Developed high-yielding semi-dwarf, anthocyanin-rich black rice (Chakhao) near-isogenic lines (NILs) through marker-assisted breeding.
- As lead collector, contributed to augmenting hill rice germplasm from Manipur to the National Gene Bank, New Delhi.
- Involved in DUS characterization of farmers’ rice varieties from NE Region of India and in creating awareness about conservation of landraces in the region.
- Developed promising breeding lines in field pea with resistance to powdery mildew and rust for NEH region of India.
Research interests: Improvement of cauliflower and brinjal for abiotic and biotic stress; germplasm characterization and genetic inheritance studies; marker-assisted breeding.
